Just realized my resume format was hurting me for years

I always used a fancy two-column template with graphics until a recruiter in Denver told me it crashed their applicant tracking system. She said plain text with clear headers gets past the bots every time, so I switched to a simple single-column layout. Has anyone else dealt with ATS systems rejecting creative formatting?

Feel for you man, that's a rough lesson to learn the hard way. Recruiters see hundreds of these things and simple always wins over fancy with those ATS bots. Hope the new format gets you past the gatekeepers now.

That PDF trick where you save it as an image embedded in the document can actually trick some ATS systems into skipping your text entirely. Trying to outsmart the system with hidden keywords or tables just backfired on me twice last year.
