My boss told me my project updates were just a list of tasks, not a story

He pulled me aside after a meeting last Tuesday and said, 'I need to know why things matter, not just what you did.' I was just sending bullet points in Slack every Friday. Now I start each update with the main goal, then explain how my work moved us toward it. It feels weird, but he says it's better. Anyone else have to change how they report on their work?

Wait, isn't the point to show you're busy and getting things done? I get what @betty126 is saying about the bigger picture, but my old boss loved those clear bullet points. He said it saved him time. Maybe it just depends on who's reading it.

Your boss is right, even if it feels weird at first. I had to learn this the hard way too. Bullet points just show you were busy, but starting with the goal shows your work has a point. It forces you to connect your tasks to the bigger picture. Maybe try adding one line about what you're doing next to keep that story going. It gets easier once you get used to framing it that way.
