My old boss in Phoenix said I was 'too nice' to ask for a raise after 3 years

We were in his office after a project finished, and he told me being agreeable was holding me back... I got the raise, but the comment stuck. Do you think being seen as 'nice' can hurt your career growth?

A buddy of mine got told she was too nice for management and watched two louder guys get promoted instead.

Ugh, does being the office doormat count as a career plan? I once got a "feedback" note that said I was "too easy to work with" which felt like getting told my best quality was also my worst... It's like they want you to be kind but also somehow pushy, and good luck figuring out that balance.
