My old boss said one thing about networking that finally made it click

I had coffee with my former manager from the warehouse, Dave, last Tuesday. He was the kind of guy who never pushed us to go to industry mixers or hand out cards, so I asked him straight up why he never bothered. He said, 'Networking isnt about collecting contacts, its about collecting people who remember you when it counts.' That hit different because I always thought I had to sell myself, but he explained that he just shows up to the same diner every Friday morning and lets conversations happen naturally. Since then I stopped treating every chat like a job interview and started asking about peoples kids or their truck repairs. Its been three weeks and I already got two leads on better shifts just by being the guy who listens. Has anyone else had a mentor reframe something so basic that it changed your whole approach? What did they say?
