Shoutout to the guy who told me to just 'act like I belong' at a big tech conference

I tried it last month in Chicago, ended up in a closed-door roundtable with senior engineers for a project I knew nothing about... I just nodded a lot and said 'interesting' a bunch. Learned that sometimes the best way to get in the door is to just walk through it, even if you're totally lost. Anyone else have a story about faking it until you made it?

The nod-and-smile method is a real survival skill.

What specific situations make you use it the most? Like, is it for family gatherings where someone starts talking politics, or more for work meetings when a boss explains a bad plan for the tenth time? I've definitely used it when my neighbor goes on about his lawn care routine.
