Vent: I took a general resume workshop versus a targeted one for my field

Last month I went to a free city career center workshop that covered resumes for everyone. Then my friend paid for a small group session just for data analysts. The difference was huge. The general one gave me basic tips like 'use action verbs', but the targeted one had me redo my project section to highlight SQL queries and A/B test results. The specific feedback on my portfolio link was a game changer. Has anyone else seen a big jump from getting industry specific advice over generic help?

My old resume had "used Excel" until a mentor told me to list specific functions like VLOOKUP and pivot tables. Totally agree with fionarodriguez about needing the field's buzzwords. The generic stuff just doesn't cut it for tech roles.

Generic resume advice is like getting a map that just says "go that way." My old one had "managed projects" until a tech friend pointed out that hiring managers want to see "built Python scripts to clean data sets." Night and day difference. Those general workshops are fine if you want a job at a place that calls everyone a rockstar. For real roles, you need someone who knows the field's buzzwords.
