A trim carpenter in Portland told me my scribe lines were lazy
He watched me cut a baseboard to a wonky old wall and said 'you're marking the gap, not the wall'. I started holding the pencil at a 45 and walking the block along the actual surface, now my miters come within a 16th without any caulk tricks. Anyone else get a game-changer comment like that from a random guy on site?

Got a buddy who does decks, and some old timer watched him pencil a ledger line and goes 'you're cutting to your mark, not your tape'. Just switched his whole layout game overnight, said he never trusted the hook again.
