Building a bunk bed with my dad taught me more than just carpentry

As a kid, my dad and I spent weekends in his shop. He showed me how to measure twice and cut once. Now, my own kids watch videos instead of working with their hands. I miss the smell of sawdust and the quiet focus we shared, because those moments built more than furniture.

Wait, a toddler was that good at swiping already?

Heard a talk show host say building things with parents wires your brain for patience. Totally missing that with my kids glued to tablets.

Yesterday at the library, I saw a toddler expertly swiping a tablet while his mom built a block tower alone. That talk show host might have a point, but what parent has the energy to fight the tablet pull? Is patience even a skill kids need when every game gives a reward right away? Maybe we're just training them to expect quick fixes for boredom. But let's be real, sometimes that screen time feels like the only break we get, doesn't it?
