Chat with an old framer last week changed how I nail

Had a 30 minute talk with a guy who's been framing since the 70s over coffee at the job site. He told me I'm overthinking my nail spacing and just need to trust the pattern and move faster. Anyone else had an old timer's advice that actually sped up your work?

I used to be one of those guys who'd measure twice and then measure again, lmao. Hearing an old framer say "just trust the pattern" made me realize I was wasting time second-guessing every nail. It's like my brain finally clicked that the spacing doesn't have to be perfect to the millimeter, it just needs to be consistent and fast. Honestly, watching him work was humbling, he'd zip through a wall while I was still fiddling with my tape. I've been trying to copy his rhythm on the last couple jobs and it's way less stressful, not to mention faster.

Yo, @the_mia, I felt that one deep in my soul. My first framing job I measured each stud bay like four times before cutting, and my lead just laughed and said "you're building furniture not a watch." Took me way too long to learn that 16 on center means close enough, not down to the 32nd. I still catch myself checking my tape when I don't need to, like some kind of nervous tick. Watching old timers just trust the layout is humbling for sure, they move so smooth and the wall still stands up. Did you ever try just marking your pattern with a chalk line and not looking back?
