Just realized I'd been sharpening my chisels backward for 8 years

Was at a shop in Portland last spring watching a retired cabinetmaker work. He looked at my chisel and asked if I was trying to polish it or cut wood. Turns out I was grinding the bevel on the wrong side this whole time. Felt pretty dumb but he showed me the right angle on the spot. Anyone else ever have a basic thing you thought you knew turn out totally backwards?

Saw a woodworker on YouTube say most people sharpen chisels wrong for years.

Feels like I wasted years pushing my chisels wrong before figuring it out myself.
