Levels over studs, biggest mistake I see on job sites

Watched a guy anchor a whole shelving unit to drywall using only a level line. Three weeks later, homeowner calls, stuff's on the floor. I've pulled off trim in Denver where the studs are out by half an inch. A level tells you the floor's flat, not where the framing sits. Magnetic stud finder costs 30 bucks, beats guessing every time. Anyone else run into framing that's way off plumb from the builder?

My buddy Mike did this exact thing putting up shelves in his garage outside Boulder. Spent two hours with a level making it look perfect, never touched a stud finder. Shelves held for maybe a month, then the whole thing ripped out one night when his kid leaned on it. He found out later the builder used 24 inch spacing instead of 16 on that wall, plus the framing was twisted. Cost him 200 bucks in drywall repair on top of the new shelves.
