Old timer's tape tip saved my cabinet doors last month

I usually don't listen to the guy who's been doing this since the 80s, but he swore by using a scrap 2x4 as a spacer for overlay doors. Tried it on a set of maple cabinets in Portland and the gaps came out dead even, first try. Anyone else got a trick from a veteran that actually worked better than the modern jig?

Blew my mind when I tried this last week. Ive been fighting with those little plastic spacers forever and this old school trick just worked. Feels like I should be paying him royalties or something.

My dad had the same trick for fixing our old garage door back in 1987.
