Shoutout to the 1950s trim work at the old courthouse in Annapolis I walked through last Saturday
I was killing time before a lunch thing so I walked into the old courthouse in Annapolis and ended up staring at the trim for 20 minutes like a weirdo. The crown molding in that place was run by hand, you can see where the profiles change at every corner because they cut each piece to fit the wall instead of mitering a factory profile. What got me was the window casing, the backband was a separate piece nailed on and the reveal is dead even after 70 years, no caulk anywhere holding it together. I looked at the stairs too and the handrail has this little cove detail underneath that nobody does now because it doubles your sanding time. Meanwhile I just finished a built-in for a client in Crofton and I was proud of my miters until I saw this stuff. No nail guns, no filler, just sharp tools and a guy who cared. Do any of you still cut your own backband on a shaper for jobs like this or is that gone for good?
