That job at the Salt Lake City mall made me rethink my extension cord habits

I was doing trim work at the City Creek Center last month and noticed every other carpenter's cord was beat to hell, cracked ends, exposed wire in a couple spots. One guy's 50 footer sparked on a metal door frame and we all just stood there for a second. With 3 different crews sharing one floor, someone's gonna get zapped or start a fire. Has anyone else seen this on big commercial sites, and what do you do when the GC won't enforce a cord inspection rule?

Read somewhere that sparks on metal doors are how half those mall fires start.
