That old timer at the hardware store in Tacoma said my framing square was just for show

He told me a real carpenter could square a wall with a piece of string and a nail, then walked off. Has anyone actually tried that method on a big project?

Tried it once and it actually works surprisingly well.

Right? It's one of those things you expect to be a total gimmick. But then you actually get a decent result from it. Makes you wonder what other simple tricks are out there that actually work.

Totally agree with you and rileybarnes. My mom swore by the baking soda trick for cleaning pans, and I finally tried it last week. It got off stuff I'd scrubbed at for ages. What's a simple trick you've been surprised by?
