A customer in Amarillo told me carpet pads last 10 years, and I've been telling folks the total opposite
I was down in Amarillo last Friday pulling up a 12x15 berber for a lady who's lived in that house since 1998, and she swore her original pad was still fine after 26 years. I've always told my customers to figure on replacing the pad with the carpet, so I felt like a real know-it-all until I actually looked at the thing and it was just flattened out, no crumbling at all. Now I'm wondering if I've been costing people money this whole time, so what's your rule of thumb for when a pad is actually done?
