A mechanic in Dayton changed how I look at carpet seams

So I'm in the waiting room at a shop getting my truck looked at, and the guy next to me starts asking about my knife. Turns out he does carpet restoration for flood damage. We got talking about seams and he told me he never trusts a seam that's less than 2 inches from a wall because the pad compresses different there. Said he's pulled up a thousand carpets that split right at that spot. Honestly, I've been installing for 7 years and never once thought about it that way. I always just lined up my seams wherever looked clean. Has anyone else messed with seam placement near walls or is this just a restoration guy thing?

Is 2 inches really gonna make or break a seam, or is that just one guy's pet peeve?
