Dropped $400 on a power stretcher that barely worked out of the box

I saved up for months to get a decent power stretcher from a brand I thought was reliable. First job I used it on, the handle started slipping and it wouldn't hold tension past the first few feet. Called the supplier and they said it was a common defect but wouldn't take it back since I'd already used it on carpet. Ended up having to finish that 20x15 living room with a knee kicker and my back is still sore two days later. I'm looking at renting one from Home Depot next time but the daily rate adds up fast. Has anyone else had luck with a specific brand that doesn't crap out after one job?

Ever try the Crain brand? Mine's held up way better than that.

Did you buy the warranty too or did you just trust the brand name? Sounds like you got the good old "we'll fix it after you wreck your back" special.
