Finally got the hang of cutting around those tricky floor vents without a seam
For years, I would just cut a square hole and patch in a piece, leaving a visible seam right at the vent. About six months ago, I watched an old-timer in Tucson do a full wrap-around cut with a knee-kicker to stretch the carpet right up to the vent edge. I tried it on a job last week with a 12x12 vent and it worked perfectly. The carpet looks like one solid piece with no seams to come apart. It only added maybe 15 minutes to the install. Anyone have other methods for dealing with floor vents that look clean?

Wait, hold on. That's not a knee-kicker, that's a stair tool or a carpet awl. A knee-kicker is for starting the stretch on the main area. You use the point of the stair tool to tuck the carpet fibers right into that cut edge around the vent. If you tried to use a kicker there, you'd probably tear the carpet. The method is right, just the tool name is off.

That wrap-around cut method is a total game changer, I mean it finally clicked for me too after years of those ugly seams.
