Found a 15 year old stain under a rental carpet yesterday
I pulled up some old berber from a duplex in Springfield and there was this huge dark ring right in the middle of the living room. The tenant had been there for 6 years and swore they never spilled anything. Turns out it was from a potted plant that sat there for over a decade and just slowly bled tannins into the pad. The floor underneath was fine though, just the carpet and padding had to go. Has anyone else run into phantom stains that don't match what the current tenant says?

Actually that's not quite a petrified fry. Petrification usually means minerals replaced the organic material over a long time. A french fry left under a couch for a few months is more like a mummified fry. It dried out and hardened but it didn't turn to stone. I checked this with a guy I know who's into geology. He said fries lack the right cellular structure for true petrification anyway. Your fry is basically a potato jerky with some dust stuck to it. So you've got a fossil-like object but not a real fossil.
