My uncle told me to always use a knee kicker on the first row, not a power stretcher.

He said it for years, that you get a better feel for the tension and can adjust the carpet before you lock it in. I ignored him for a long time, thinking the power stretcher was just faster and better for everything. Last week, I was doing a big living room in a split-level house and the wall was way out of square. I used the power stretcher first like usual and ended up with a nasty wrinkle about two feet in that I had to cut out and seam. If I'd just listened and used the knee kicker to set that first line, I would have seen the problem right away. It cost me an extra hour and a bunch of wasted material. I called him after and he just laughed. Has anyone else had a stubborn habit that an old timer finally broke you of?

Used to think that was just being stubborn. Learned the hard way on a tricky hallway job last year.

Oh the "learned the hard way" club. My membership card arrived after a hallway that was basically an optical illusion. Measured twice, cut once, still had to redo a whole section.
