Stopped using tack strip on concrete slabs 3 years ago and I'm not going back
I used to tack strip every concrete job out of habit, and honestly I was wasting hours drilling and plugging for nothing. Three years back I did a 1,400 square foot basement in Naperville and the homeowner's slab had a moisture issue, so I tried gluing the strip down with a good urethane adhesive instead of drilling. It held so well I started doing it on every slab job since. Now I skip the hammer drill, skip the anchors, and skip the dust, and my knees feel it at the end of the day in a good way. The trick is you need a clean slab and you gotta let the adhesive set up before you stretch anything or the strip will pull. I'm not saying it works on every pour, and cracked slabs still get drilled in my book. Who else has switched over, and what adhesive are you running that actually holds up after a few winters?
