The $600 carpet job where I forgot to check the subfloor first
Big house in Austin last Tuesday. Living room, hallway, two bedrooms. Customer picked out some thick plush. Everything looked fine til I started stretching. The subfloor was water damaged from an old leak. Came up in chunks. Had to pull everything back, tell the homeowner they needed a whole new subfloor first. Lost a full day and had to reschedule. How do you guys handle it when the homeowner swears the floor was "fine" but it clearly isnt?

My cousin does home inspections and he sees this exact thing all the time. People just don't want to look at what's actually underneath the surface. I've noticed it's like that with everything now. Nobody checks the foundation before they start building. They just want the pretty stuff on top and hope the ugly stuff stays hidden. But it always comes out eventually, usually when you're already committed. How do you even get homeowners to understand that paying for a good subfloor now saves them triple the headache later?
