That $500 home inspection missed a roof patch from 2 years ago

Closed on a house in Plaza Midwood last month. Inspector walked the roof, said it looked fine. Three weeks in I notice a wet spot in the upstairs ceiling during a storm. Got a roofer up there, he finds a 4x4 foot patch that was covered with new shingles but never sealed right underneath. Cost me $1,200 to fix. Inspector's report didn't mention any signs of previous repair work. Has anyone else had an inspection that totally whiffed on something obvious?

Respectfully, inspectors can't tear up shingles to see what's underneath. You got unlucky but that doesn't mean he missed something obvious.

So the inspector charges $500 for "good luck, hope your ceiling doesn't collapse"?
