Two inspectors gave me totally different numbers on the same house
I was under contract on a 1950s bungalow in Plaza Midwood and paid for two separate inspections to be safe. The first guy quoted me $18k in immediate fixes, mostly around the crawlspace moisture and old wiring. The second one walked through and said the place was solid, just needed a $600 dehumidifier and a new panel. Turns out the first inspector was pushing his own remediation company, that's a conflict I never even thought to check. Anyone else ever get wildly different inspection results, and how did you sort out who to trust?

The real tell here is the timeline of when each inspector gave you the numbers. If the second guy came after the first one already flagged stuff, he knew what to look for and could've easily brushed it off to win your business. Always ask for photos and specific code references, not just dollar amounts. A vague estimate is a red flag no matter which side it lands on. And check if either of them carries errors and omissions insurance, that usually filters out the ones running side hustles.
