Had an old rotary sweep brush snap on me mid-job last Thursday

I was working on a job over in Oakwood, third flue of the day, and the old rotary brush I've had for like 12 years just sheared right off at the handle. The head went flying up the flue and got stuck halfway. Had to spend an extra hour with a shop vac and a flexible rod to fish it out. Cost me a $60 replacement and lost a half day of work. Has anyone else had an older tool just give out on them like that?

Man, that's rough. I feel for you. I had a similar thing happen with a drill I've had since trade school, the chuck just locked up solid on me two weeks into a big install. Had to borrow a buddy's spare for the rest of the week, and by the time I got the old one fixed it never felt the same. There's something about losing a tool you've counted on for that long that just puts a bad taste in your mouth. A half day lost plus the hassle of fishing that head out, I'd be steaming. At least you got it back, but it never feels like the same tool after a failure like that.

So did you ever break down and replace it completely, or are you still nursing that old drill along? Because I've got a sawzall I've been babying for five years after a motor rebuild, and it's gotten to the point where I'm waiting for it to die just so I can justify a new one. Sometimes it's harder to let go of something that's almost good than one that's totally wrecked.
