Polymer logs seemed gimmicky but I'm a believer now
I had a customer last winter who kept having buildup issues with their insert. They burned those pressed logs from the grocery store every night. I was skeptical when they swore by some off brand polymer log they got at a farm supply. But I went back after 3 months to do a clean and the creosote was way lighter than usual. Has anyone else seen real results with those things or was this a fluke?

Your customer might have just had good luck with that particular batch. Those polymer logs can be hit or miss depending on who makes them. The cheap ones often have weird fillers that leave a sticky ash residue, which is its own kind of headache to clean up. Not to mention they burn way hotter than regular wood which isn't great for some inserts. Just seems like more of a shortcut than a real solution if you ask me.

Huh, that's funny you mention the sticky ash residue. I actually read a thread on a hearth forum where a guy tested three different brands of polymer logs side by side in a shop stove. Two of them left this weird clumpy ash that stuck to the baffle like glue, but the third brand came out looking more like normal wood ash. So yeah, seems like the quality really varies a ton depending on who's making them.
