Question about how much creosote builds up in a season

I just cleaned out a chimney in a house that had a wood stove going all winter. The buildup was almost 3 inches thick in places. Found a study from the Chimney Safety Institute of America that said 1/8 inch of creosote is enough to start a dangerous fire. How often do you guys actually check yours between cleanings?

Right, that 1/8 inch rule is wild when you see inches of that crap piled up.

Jeez, I wonder how many people just run their stove all season without even peeking until something goes wrong. A lot of folks probably think if the smoke looks normal they're fine, but that stuff can hide in the pipe bends and sneak up on you.
