Rant: Customer told me my smoke test was sloppy and he was right

Guy with a 1920s house in Providence pointed out I missed a hairline crack where the flue meets the crown. Ever since I started using a fog machine instead of just a flashlight, I catch way more small leaks.

330 bucks for a fog machine just to catch a crack that's probably been there for 80 years? Seems like overkill, honestly. But hey, if it makes you feel better about missing stuff, I guess it's worth it.

Funny thing about old cracks though... sometimes they're not just cosmetic. That 80 year old crack could be a sign the foundation is shifting, and fog machines catch airflow patterns you'd never see with your eyes. My buddy does building inspections and swears by them for finding drafts and gaps that lead to bigger problems down the road. If that fog machine saves one major repair later, 330 bucks is nothing compared to a 10k foundation fix. Plus you can use it for Halloween parties after, so it's not like it's a one trick pony.
