Showerthought: I spent 4 years fighting creosote with the wrong brush size on every job in Portland.

A senior sweep in Eugene pulled out his gauge and showed me my 8-inch brush was actually leaving a half-inch gap on 7-inch flues, and I felt like an idiot for never measuring the liner before buying brushes, has anyone else been using the wrong diameter this whole time?

My old boss in Seattle swore by a specific brand of drill bit for masonry work. He'd get mad if you showed up with anything else, saying the cheap ones would snap. I never saw one break, but he had a whole drawer full of just that brand.

But maybe he just liked having a drawer full of them.

Read an article where a contractor said measuring first saves more money than any tool. They called it the "tape measure tax" people pay for guessing. That half-inch gap story is exactly what they meant.
