Thought those fancy creosote sweeping logs were a total scam until my flue caught fire

Old timer at the bar told me they were just sawdust and paraffin but I had a customer last winter who swore by them. Grabbed one on a whim after I couldn't get a brush up my rental's crooked chimney. Burned it, ran a camera up there a week later and that fluffy crap was actually gone. Still don't trust em for heavy buildup but for light maintenance? Okay fine they work. Anyone else had one actually do something or was I just lucky?

Oh man, your mileage is gonna vary for sure. I had a buddy who used one of those logs and thought it worked fine, but then his neighbor used the same brand and ended up with this weird sticky residue all over the inside of his flue. He had to call a pro to scrape it off. In my experience, it's a total crapshoot. Kinda like those dryer vent cleaning kits you run with a drill. Some people swear they work and others end up with the brush stuck halfway through.

Is it possible those logs just work better on some types of creosote than others?
