DAE regret buying a $60 compost tumbler that did nothing for 5 months?

I grabbed one of those dual chamber tumblers at a garden center in Boise last spring thinking I'd have black gold by August. I turned that thing every other day, kept my greens and browns balanced, even added a little water when it looked dry, and 5 months later I opened it up to find basically the same banana peels and leaves I put in. Meanwhile my neighbor just piles his scraps behind the shed and stirs it with a pitchfork twice a month, and his stuff breaks down way faster than mine did. Turns out a tumbler can't hold enough volume to get hot, so I basically paid 60 bucks for a spinning trash can. Anyone had luck with a plain wire bin instead, or am I just bad at this?
