Hit 500 pounds of food waste diverted from the landfill in 6 months from my kitchen alone

I started weighing my compost and food scraps back in January just to see what I was really throwing out. Last week I added it all up and hit exactly 512 pounds. That number shocked me because I thought I was already pretty careful about food waste. I just wonder how many other people are throwing away way more than they realize without actually tracking it. Has anyone else tried measuring their own waste and gotten a number that surprised them?

Whoa, 500 pounds is a lot but I guess I'm just wondering if this is really as big of a deal as people make it sound. Like yeah food waste isn't great but the landfills are already huge and overflowing with way worse stuff, so is a few hundred pounds of banana peels and eggshells really making or breaking the planet? I see people getting all worked up about composting and I just don't feel the same sense of urgency. Feels a little like being mad at someone for dripping water while there's a fire hose running next to them.
