Hot take: my neighbor in Duluth swore off gas mowing and I owe him an apology
Two summers ago my neighbor Walt in Duluth told me to ditch my gas mower and just let the clover take over the lawn, and I laughed at him. I kept mowing twice a week anyway, burned about 6 gallons of gas a month, and my yard still looked brown and sad by August. Last spring I finally gave in, stopped mowing, and let the clover and dandelions go wild, and honestly the bees showed up within weeks. My water bill dropped by about $30 a month too since I quit watering the grass. Walt was right and I hate admitting it, but now I want to go further. Has anyone actually killed their lawn on purpose and replaced it with native plants? How long did it take before it stopped looking like a mess?
