I finally switched to a heat pump after insisting my gas furnace was fine

The choice was a new gas unit or a heat pump for my house in Seattle. I went with the heat pump last winter, and my January power bill was actually $30 lower than the year before. Anyone else make the switch and see savings, or did I just get lucky?

Had a buddy in Portland make the same swap last fall. His gas furnace was from the 90s and he kept complaining about the bills. He went with a heat pump and a backup gas unit for the real cold days. First month he called me bragging that his bill was $40 less even with the electric heat strips running a few mornings. Then that February freeze hit and his power bill shot up like crazy for one month. But over the whole season he said he came out ahead by like $150.
