Just read that a single cargo ship can produce as much pollution as 50 million cars. Saw it in a report from the International Council on Clean Transportation.

perez.elliot mentioned them testing sails, and yeah, I've actually seen that up close. My buddy works at a port in Rotterdam, and they've got a couple of cargo ships running these big hard sails, like kite tech. They cut fuel burn by like 15-20% on certain routes, nothing crazy but not nothing. The trick is they only use them on the right wind patterns, you can't just slap sails on every run. Still beats burning bunker fuel just to move boxes across the ocean.

Heard they're finally testing sails on some ships to cut fuel use (and pollution).

Yeah but that seems like a huge step back. Modern engines are way more reliable than hoping for wind.
