My friend said to skip the reusable bags and just use what I already have

She told me last year that buying a bunch of new cotton totes for groceries was worse than just reusing old plastic ones a few times. I thought she was nuts, but I looked it up. A study from 2021 said a cotton bag needs to be used over 100 times to be better than plastic. Now I just wash out my old plastic bags until they fall apart. Anyone else get advice that flipped your thinking on a green habit?

Your friend is right, it's just math. But man, do we really need to stress over every single bag? Feels like we're missing the bigger picture sometimes.

The math is right but stressing over each bag misses the forest for the trees.

Grace is kinda missing something too though. The math they're talking about only works if you assume every bag is handled the same way, which isn't how this works in practice. Different routes, different loadouts, different timing. It's not one neat equation.
