My sister called me out for leaving the car running while I waited

She saw me idling outside her place for maybe ten minutes last Tuesday and just said 'you know that's like burning money and air, right?' I never really thought about it, but I looked it up. My old sedan burns about a quarter gallon an hour just sitting there. I've completely stopped doing it now, even for quick stops. Does anyone have a good rule for how long is okay before it's better to shut the engine off?

Figured out my old truck was basically a cash register in park after my neighbor gave me the same look. Now I turn it off if I'm waiting more than thirty seconds, which feels ridiculous but my wallet is happier.
