Solar panels 3 years in - did they actually pay off?
I dropped $12,000 on a 6kW solar setup back in 2021. First year I saved about $800 on electric bills, but then my inverter died and that was another $1,500 out of pocket. Plus my roof needed repairs last fall and the panel removal and reinstall cost me $600. On one hand, I'm still ahead on savings overall, but on the other hand, the maintenance has been way more than I expected. Anyone else have solar for a few years and feel like the math is tighter than you thought?

Honestly I used to be one of those guys who thought solar was a no-brainer investment. I read all the math upfront and it looked golden. Then I helped a buddy install his system and watched his inverter fail in year two, and my whole view shifted. The hidden costs are real and people don't talk about them enough. Roof work, insurance hassles, parts that crap out way earlier than they should. You're still ahead overall but I bet that margin is smaller than you planned for. It's wild how much the actual numbers depend on luck with your specific equipment and roof.

Man that really sucks about the inverter dying, I've heard that's the biggest wildcard with solar. The hidden stuff like roof work fees and reinstall costs add up way faster than the glossy sales numbers ever show. You're still ahead but it definitely feels like the payoff window keeps moving depending on what breaks next.
