That local solar co-op in Tucson folded last month with my deposit

I put $2,000 down on a group solar install through Tucson Sun Power back in March and by June they stopped answering calls. Last week the Better Business Bureau flagged them as out of business with 40+ complaints just like mine. Anyone else get burned by a local clean energy co-op that seemed too good to be true?

I had a buddy out in Phoenix lose $3,500 to something similar called Sonoran Solar Co-op back in 2021. They were advertising group rates that were way below market price and everyone jumped on it. Turns out they were just collecting deposits and never had the hardware or permits lined up. The co-op model works fine for things like bulk buying light bulbs or lawn care but for solar installs you're just pooling risk with strangers who might not vet things properly. Check if your state has a solar contractor recovery fund that covers deposits like that.

Heard about a lady in my building who signed up for a community solar thing and they kept bumping the install date back every month until she just gave up asking for her deposit back.
