The day my compost bin overflowed and I stopped being lazy about food waste

I used to think composting was for people with big yards and too much time, so I just tossed everything in the trash. Last August in Seattle, my kitchen bin got so full that the lid popped off and juice ran down the cabinet, and I slipped on it in my socks at 7am. That mess took an hour to clean up and I was so annoyed that I finally looked up how our city handles organics. Turns out my apartment complex has a shared compost drop-off two blocks away, and the bin is 5 gallons so I only need to empty it every 3 days. Now I keep a small countertop bucket with a charcoal filter, and I take it out on my way to the bus stop, no big deal. The weird part is I actually pay attention to what I'm throwing away now, and I've cut my trash bag usage from 2 a week to 1. Has anyone else had a gross moment that forced them into a climate habit they kept avoiding?

My freezer smelled like rotting fish for three weeks after I forgot a bag of shrimp shells in there.
