Thought composting was hippie nonsense until my HOA fined me $200 for bagged yard waste

My neighbor showed me his pile in April and I figured I'd try it in my own backyard in Portland, and now I've got zero lawn bags and dirt that doesn't smell like anything, has anyone else had a surprise win like that?

Heard it attracts rats if you do it wrong but glad it worked out for you.

Wait, what exactly attracts them? Like is it the scraps left behind or the smell of whatever you're cooking or both? I'm asking because my neighbor tried one of those countertop compost bins last summer and ended up with field mice getting into his garage through a tiny gap in the siding. He swears it was because he wasn't burying the fresh stuff deep enough in the pile. But then another guy I know uses a closed tumbler and says he's never had a problem in 5 years. So is it more about the type of bin or just how often you turn it?
