Finally looked up the tolerance on a standard A2 tool steel end mill
Saw a chart showing most off-the-shelf end mills are actually ground to within a few tenths of nominal, which is way tighter than I ever guessed. Found it on a Sandvik spec sheet I stumbled across during a lunch break.

Wow, that's way tighter than I figured too! So when suppliers list a "standard" tolerance do they actually mean something like +/- 0.0002 or is that just the ground finish they shoot for? Would love to know if those same specs apply to the cheap import sets or if that's more of a premium brand thing.

Read that same spec sheet a while back and honestly it blew my mind too. Tbh from what I heard from a guy at a tooling shop the cheap import sets are all over the place, sometimes double or triple the tolerance of a premium brand. Ngl it just depends on who's grinding them and what they charge for QC.
