My old supervisor swore by skip feeds, I thought he was lazy

He kept telling me to run 0.12 inch per tooth on a roughing pass in 4140, and I figured he just didn't want to change tools. After three snapped inserts in two days, I tried his number and the cut ran smooth for 6 hours straight. Anyone else find that older guys sometimes just know the machine limits better than the book?
