Swapped out my dull end mill for a brand new one mid-run yesterday and the finish quality blew my mind

The 37th time I changed a bit mid-job I finally remembered to check the runout before cursing my machine. My first attempt at swapping tools ended with me installing a drill bit backwards and wondering why it wouldn't cut. The finish on that new end mill must have been night and day compared to your old dull one. I still can't believe I spent six months thinking a chipped carbide bit was just how aluminum was supposed to look. Now I change cutters like a normal person and actually see reflective surfaces. Makes me wonder how many projects I ruined just being too cheap to throw away a worn tool.

HAHA the "drill bit backwards" thing got me. I definitely did that my first week of machining and spent a good ten minutes blaming the chuck before I realized I was just an idiot. But seriously, running a chipped carbide bit for six months and thinking that's just "how aluminum sounds" is absolutely WILD. You must have been producing parts that looked like they were chewed up by a rabid beaver. At least now you can join the rest of us who change tools BEFORE they start leaving a surface finish that looks like a gravel driveway.
