Swore off HSM on our old Haas for months, then a job in Wichita made me try it
I always ran full slotting on our 2012 Haas VF-2 because a guy at my first shop said high speed machining eats end mills, and I stuck with that for about 4 years. Last month I had a batch of 300 aluminum brackets that had to ship in 6 days, so I bumped the spindle to 10,000 rpm and cut the stepover down to 8 percent with a 1/2 inch carbide rougher. The cycle time dropped from 22 minutes to 9, and the same tool made it through all 300 parts with barely any wear. Now I want to know what stepover and doc you guys run on 6061 with a 3/8 tool, because I think I was leaving a lot on the table.
