Talked to a retired guy at the bar about his old Bridgeport. Said he ran it for 30 years and never once used a tool probe.

My first job in a shop, the old-timer handed me a flashlight and an edge finder and said "go find center, kid" (I think I spent 20 minutes chasing my own shadow). That Bridgeport guy sounds like he had the touch, @kevin_sullivan, I bet he could sneak up on a dimension by ear alone. I swear, half the time I'm just hoping my indicator doesn't jump while I'm trying to set a .001 depth. Makes you appreciate the guys who could tram a head without even thinking about it.

That's the old school way. Makes you wonder how many parts were made with just a good eye and a steady hand.

My uncle ran a machine shop in Toledo until the late 90s. He said the real skill was in setting up your own edge finders and indicators. Did that guy talk about how he handled his first piece setups or hitting precise depths?
