The 0.002" rule I found in a 1984 manual still holds up today
I was digging through some old tooling docs my last shop had stashed away, and found a 1984 Hardinge manual that said spindle runout should be checked with a tenths indicator, not a half-thousand one. That blew my mind because every modern setup I've seen uses a .0005 indicator for that job. The manual claims you can catch bearing wear about 40 hours earlier with the finer resolution, and honestly after trying it on our 1998 Mori-Seiki last week, I'm starting to believe it. So do you guys stick with the old-school precision method or trust the newer, faster checks? Has anyone else run into a weird spec in an old manual that ended up being right?

That tenths indicator just tells you what you already know on a 35 year old machine.
