Used to eyeball every setup with an indicator, now I trust the probe and it feels weird
Back when I started on a little Benchman mill in 2003, I touched off every job with a dial indicator and a feeler gauge, and honestly I got pretty fast at it. I could sweep a vise in about 4 minutes and know it was dead on because my hands did the work. Then we got a machine with a spindle probe around 2011 and I fought it for a whole year, swearing the numbers were lying to me. Now I punch in the cycle and let the probe sweep the jaws while I'm grabbing the next part off the bench. It saves me maybe 10 minutes a setup but the bigger thing is it catches the stuff I used to miss when I was rushing before lunch. Last week the probe flagged a jaw that was out 0.0015 on the back corner and I never would have caught that with a feeler. I still keep the indicator in the drawer and pull it out when a job feels off, because old habits die hard. Any of you still double check the probe with a real sweep, or have you made peace with trusting the readout?
