My friend told me to skip learning HTML and CSS and just jump into JavaScript

I spent a whole weekend trying to build a button that changed color and it was a total mess because I didn't understand the basic structure. Has anyone else been given advice that set them back?

Ugh, that's like when people try to fix one leak and end up flooding the whole house...
